"I feel good, the only thing I miss is my mum because she always travels with me," an emotional Dementieva, 27, said.

"She couldn't come this time because of medical reasons, she doesn't feel good and it feels weird. It just feels strange without her and even when I come to the locker room, people are asking where's my mum.

"We have such a close relationship travelling together for more than 10 years and to be without her is kind of hard.

"I talk to her a couple of times during the day and she was very glad she could watch live yesterday's match [against Australian Sam Stosur].

"She was happy for me, but it's also tough for her. People have been asking why I've been playing so good, I'm just trying to please my mum because she doesn't feel good.

"I just want her to feel just a little better. She has done such a good job helping me for all these years and she is always with me - she's my mum."

Dementieva said the absence of her mother's immediate support had tested her mental strength in the patriotic Rod Laver Arena cauldron which swang behind Stosur on Saturday night.
