Cytat: | Davis Cup: Australia names inexperienced lineup
03-09-2008 - 12:09
Lleyton Hewitt's season-ending surgery has forced Australia to name one of its most inexperienced Davis Cup lineups for its World Group playoff against Chile.
The six-player team named Wednesday by Australian captain John Fitzgerald has four Cup rookies.
While Hewitt continues his recovery from hip surgery, Chris Guccione will lead Australia in the Sept. 19-21 match on clay at Antofagasta.
Fitzgerald is also hoping claycourt specialist and regular squad member Peter Luczak, who hasn't played since a first-round French Open loss in May due to hamstring and hip injuries, will be fit to take on Chile, which will be led by Fernando Gonzalez.
Doubles stalwart Paul Hanley must undergo thyroid surgery and is also unavailable.
Even if Luczak plays, Fitzgerald will have to play at least two rookies chosen from among Carsten Ball, 21, Brydan Klein, 19, Sam Groth, 20, and 15-year-old Bernard Tomic.
Tomic and Klein, the winners of the past two Australian Open junior championships, and Ball all have experience as Davis Cup hitting partners.
While a victory in Chile would elevate Australia to the Davis Cup's 16-nation World Group in 2009, defeat would leave the 28-time Cup champions stranded in the second-tier Asia-Oceania division for at least another year.

Cytat: | Groth's Davis Cup delight
Melbourne,11 September 2008
Rob O'Gorman
Two weeks ago, Sam Groth was in Adelaide preparing for an upcoming tour event in Bangkok. But his plans quickly changed when he received an invitation to Optus Australian Davis Cup captain John Fitzgerald's house, where he was told he had been selected in Australia's six-man squad to tackle Chile.
Groth said it hadn't crossed his mind that he might be chosen for the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group Play-off in Antofagasta from September 19 to 21.
"I was very surprised but also over the moon and now I'm pumped and ready," he said.
"It's been my dream to play for my country and represent Australia. Since I started playing I've wanted to play Davis Cup, so for me it's huge."
Groth will be joined in the squad by Chris Guccione, Peter Luczak, Carsten Ball, Brydan Klein and Bernard Tomic.
The New South Welshman said he was looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere and excitement that surrounds international team competition.
"I haven't been to a Davis Cup tie before as a hitting partner or anything, so just getting down there and being in the team atmosphere will be good because I used to play footy and that's something I miss a bit is the team atmosphere," he said.
"We're going to be pretty hungry because for all of us it's a huge opportunity to represent our country."
The 20 year old is in the midst of the most successful year of his career with a rapid rise up the rankings from 421 at the end of 2007 to his current ranking of No.234.
In June, Groth secured his first victory in an ATP event with a win over British wildcard Jamie Baker in Nottingham.
The result capped an impressive period for Groth, who defeated world No.40 Janko Tipsarevic en route to qualifying for the Nottingham main draw, and a few weeks later beat another top 100 player in Dudi Sela.
"That was a big stepping stone," he said.
"Nottingham was probably the best but then to back it up a couple of weeks later and have another couple of good wins was great."
With his coach Paul Baccanello, Groth has been working hard towards gaining more consistency in his game in the hope of reaching the top 200 by the end of the year.
Before that though, he is focused on doing all he can to help Australia get over the line against their Chilean opponents.
"All the fans will be going for Chile but I guess when you get down there and amongst the atmosphere, anything can happen." |

Sept 10
THE mystery behind the non-selection of Australia's fourth-ranked player from the least-experienced Davis Cup squad to leave these shores can now be revealed: Dutch-born world No. 154 Robert Smeets is not an Australian citizen, despite having lived here for almost half his life.
The Australian Institute of Sport scholarship-holder may yet join the party of six for next week's world group qualifying tie against favourite Chile, with Tennis Australia backing Smeets' long-standing but so far fruitless entreaties to the immigration department.
Captain John Fitzgerald's four-man team of Chris Guccione, Peter Luczak and debutants Carsten Ball and Sam Groth was lodged with the International Tennis Federation last night as required.
Yet only Guccione's place appears certain, as changes can be made up to one hour before the draw next Thursday, and practice court form will be telling.
A late exemption from the Government would enable Smeets to be added to the travelling party, rather than replacing an existing member of a squad completed by the Australian Open junior champions of the past two years: Brydan Klein and Bernard Tomic.
It is believed that, like foreign-born Australian residents Jarmila Gajdosova and Anastasia Rodionova, Smeets has had his citizenship applications stymied over the past three years because his job as a professional tennis player prevents him from spending the required amount of time each year in Australia. The left-hander was born in Sliedrecht, the Netherlands, in 1985, and emigrated with his family at the age of 13.
Smeets has won only one of seven tour-level singles matches in his career but contested the past two Australian Opens and this year received a wildcard into the French Open through Tennis Australia's reciprocal deal with the French tennis federation.
The Queenslander is a friend and sometime doubles partner of Guccione who, in Lleyton Hewitt's absence, will lead the team in the claycourt tie in Antofagasta from Friday week. Guccione and Smeets reached the doubles final of the Adelaide International in January and would provide a valuable day-two option from among a young group bereft of established combinations.
Smeets could not be contacted yesterday, and Tennis Australia declined to comment on the issue. Fitzgerald, Groth and Klein leave for Chile today, while coach Darren Cahill has been preparing Ball, Tomic and Guccione in Las Vegas.
Luczak lost in the first round of his comeback tournament in the Netherlands last week, having been sidelined with a hip injury since May, and while the Victorian claycourter remains one of only two available players with cup experience, Smeets is ranked 17 places higher, and behind only Hewitt (56), Guccione (87) and veteran Joe Sirianni (147).

Lleyton na trenigu w Bangkoku:
i na ... oficjalnej kolacji ; )
Cytat: | Hewitt packs a punch in Bangkok
Bangkok,05 March 2009, Darren Pearce, Tennis Australia
He floats like a butterfly and stings like....woah, hold on, is that Lleyton?
The Optus Australian Davis Cup team's No.1 player showed his world class footwork and eye-hand co-ordination are handy for more than just his beloved tennis.
It was at the official dinner for this weekend's Asia Oceania Zone Group One tie in Bangkok where the former world number one donned the gloves.
As far as official dinner's go, this was full of entertainment value.
Australia's winningest Davis Cup player gave the official thank-you speech on behalf of the Optus Australian Davis Cup team with good grace and poise.
Some superbly athletic demonstrations of kick boxing then captured the attention of the audience, especially the visiting Australians.
At the invitation of the experts, Hewitt slapped on the gloves and didnt let his suit restrict his movement as he playfully channelled Rocky Balbao for a quick on-stage spar.
The theatre didn't end there.
Optus Australian Davis Cup team rookies are required to put on a performance of their choosing at the official dinner as part of their induction. New South Wales youngsters Greg Jones and Matt Reid opted for the macarena and co-erced their Thai equivalents to join them.
To top it all off, Thai captain Thanakorn Srichaphan (Paradorn's brother) demonstrated his amazing vocal range with a beautiful singing performance of a local song in his native language.
Fair to say his opposite number had to be strongly coerced into joining him, before the audience were treated to a rendition of "I did it my way" courtesy of Srichiphan and John Fitzgerald!
Fitzy's was a courageous performance. Very brave indeed. And perhaps it is best left there. Let the games (of the tennis variety) begin. |

Cytat: | India to host Aussies on hardcourt
New Delhi,18 March 2009
AFP
India will host their Davis Cup tie against Australia in May on a hardcourt surface in Chennai, setting aside their long-time policy to play at home on grass.
The Asia-Oceania Group I third-round tie, which will see the winner advance to the play-offs for the elite World Group, will be held at the Nungambakkam Tennis Centre from May 8-10.
The decision to play on a hardcourt was taken to help India's No.1 Somdev Devvarman, who reached the ATP Chennai Open final at the same venue in January, where he beat the likes of former world No.1 Carlos Moya and big serving Ivo Karlovic.
"The court in Chennai not only helps Somdev, but the other players in the squad are also familiar with the surface," Khanna added.
India face a tough challenge against a strong Australian side expected to feature Lleyton Hewitt and Chris Guccione in the singles.
Australia, who won the last of their 28 Davis Cup titles in 2003, were forced to play in the Asia-Oceania zone after losing to Chile 3-2 in the World Group play-offs last year.
Australia beat Thailand 3-2 and India ousted Taiwan by a similar margin earlier this month to set up the May clash. |
