When 500 of the world’s best players arrive in Melbourne in January for Australian Open 2008, they will be competing for the largest prizepool on offer in the tournament’s history – A$20.6 million.

The men’s and women’s singles winners will take home A$1.37 million each. Prize money from the round of 16 onwards has increased by seven per cent on 2007. In US dollar terms, Australian Open 2008 prize money has increased by more than 18 per cent on 2007.

And while the players will compete for more prize money than ever before on the court, the Australian Open will be ensuring that their off-court experience at the tournament is better than ever with the implementation of a detailed player experience plan.

“The Australian Open is renowned for being one of the world’s most player-friendly tournaments and we’re looking to further build this reputation in 2008,” Australian Open Tournament Director Craig Tiley said.

“Building on our already extensive player services offering, this plan goes even further to ensure the players have the best possible experience during their time here in Melbourne and at the Australian Open, from the time they step off the plane until they step back on again.”

Every area that affects the players has been enhanced – with additional changes scheduled to be implemented in 2009 – including more player services staff, both on-site and at the official player hotels, to ensure a more personalised service.

W styczniowym turnieju tenisowym Australian Open gracze będą mieli więcej szans kwestionowania orzeczeń sędziów liniowych, bowiem częściej niż w 2007 r. będą mogli odwoływać się do powtórek systemu Hawk-Eye, poinformowali organizatorzy pierwszego w 2008 r. turnieju wielkoszlemowego.
Mają oni nadzieję, że częstsze używanie "jastrzębiego oka" pomoże tenisowi stworzyć spójną technikę kontroli pracy sędziów liniowych.

W Australian Open-2008 zostanie przyjęty system "trzy plus jeden" Hawk Eye, sprecyzował we wtorek dyrektor turnieju Craig Tiley. "Oznacza to, że zawodnicy będą mogli trzy razy w secie podważać decyzję sędziowską, a czwarty raz, gdy dojdzie do tie-breaka" - powiedział Tiley. W tegorocznym turnieju obowiązywał system "dwa plus jeden".

Organizatorzy Australian Open rozszerzą wykorzystywanie systemu Hawk-Eye także na korty Vodafone Arena, poza dotychczasową główny obiekt turnieju - Rod Laver Arena. "Chcemy, by gracze i sędziowie mogli w pełni korzystać z tej inwestycji technicznej" - dodał dyrektor.

Podkreślił, że system powtórek wideo to najkrótsza droga rozwiązywania sporów dotyczących orzeczeń sędziów liniowych. "Elektroniczny system zdejmie część odpowiedzialności za te orzeczenia z głównego arbitra. Australian Open - Australian Open revise heat policy

The Australian Open have revised their extreme heat policy after a number of complaints including one from Maria Sharapova, who labelled the conditions she was forced to play in this year as "inhuman".

"The most significant policy change is that players in the upcoming Open will no longer have to complete matches that are already underway once the policy is invoked but instead will only have to complete the current set.

Another major change to the policy sees the decision to suspend play entirely at the discretion of the tournament referee. Previously Open organisers used a specific cut-off point based on calculations from a set of weather readings.

"Previously if we invoked the heat policy the matches continued until the conclusion of a match," tournament director Craig Tiley said. "Some players were out here in very extreme conditions for another three to four hours.

"Now we're saying at the end of a set the matches will come in so we're not going to create that situation where players have to battle it out with a lack of performance because of the heat for a long time.

"We can take all those factors [with an on-site weather station and meteorologist] and put them together. The most important is the actual forecast that's something that's going to really be able to help us.

"If there's a sea breeze coming in we know we'll probably be all right by the afternoon."

Strong field for Australian Open

The Australian Open will enjoy the strongest field in its 103 year history in January with all of the top 100 men and 99 of the top 100 women scheduled to compete.

Three-time champion Roger Federer heads the men's draw, while world number one and the 2004 winner Justine Henin leads the women.

The only omission from the top 100 women is Russia's world number 44 Vera Dushevina, who has been forced to withdraw with a right-foot injury.

"It's fantastic news to know that all of the world's best tennis players are coming to Melbourne in January for the Australian Open," Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley said.

"The field is sprinkled with genuine superstars, rising stars and Australians, which will no doubt lead to some brilliant tennis. At this stage, it's the strongest field in the event's history and we're sure this will equate to one of the most exciting tournaments yet."

The men's field will be completed by 16 qualifiers and eight wildcards, while the women's field has 12 qualifiers and eight wildcards.

The women's draw includes five former champions in Henin, Venus and Serena Williams, Amelie Mauresmo and Lindsay Davenport.

Among the men, Federer, Thomas Johansson and Marat Safin are all former winners. The tournament takes place in Melbourne from January 14-27.

Australian Open organisers have introduced anti-corruption measures designed to prevent illegal gambling and match-fixing.

Tennis Australia has unveiled its anti-corruption policy, which includes a hotline to report alleged corruption, a ban on unauthorised use of laptop computers courtside and enhanced security measures designed to restrict access to players.

The moves follows reports of suspicious betting activity on several overseas matches this year, as well as players claiming they had been approached to throw matches.

TA chief executive Steve Wood said strict sanctions would apply for players and their support staff for breaches of the policy, ranging from fines to life bans.

Offenders could also face prison terms, with offences arising from match-fixing facing a maximum of 15 years' jail under Victorian state law.

"We don't believe our sport has a corruption problem but we do recognise that a threat to the integrity of tennis exists," Wood said.

The January 14-27 Australian Open is the first Grand Slam tournament to introduce such measures.

Tennis Australia's newly-established Anti-Corruption Commission will be chaired by Brian Collis, QC, and former detective Sal Perna will be its investigative officer.

"We've conducted a thorough analysis of the issue and consulted with a variety of stakeholders, including other sporting organisations, betting agencies and law enforcement," Wood said.
