A Win In Toronto!

Andy has successfully started his hardcourt campaign in Toronto as he defeated France’s Nicholas Mahut in three sets today, 6-1, 6-7(6), 6-3, to move into the third round at the Rogers Cup. In one hour and 50 minutes, Andy sent 18 aces soaring and saved five break points to earn his golden ticket.

After a rain delay, Andy and Mahut took to Centre Court at the Rexall Center to get the party started on Day 4. Though the match started on Mahut’s racquet, Andy controlled the set, only allowing Mahut to hold serve once early on. A second rain delay hindered play yet again, but the match never cooled down. Andy converted two of the four break points, though Mahut didn’t go without a fight. Mahut warmed up his game and fought his way to three break points, though our number one American proved why he is just that and didn’t give him any chance to get back in the set, 6-1.

The second set played out like the 2007 finals Stella Artois Championships, both players swinging hard, fighting harder, and finding themselves in a tie-break. As each player earned but didn’t convert two break points, the match heated up and so did Andy’s shoulder as he fired 11 aces. The aces and ferocious forehands weren’t enough to surpass the Frenchman to take the match in two, ending at 6-7(6), so a third set was inevitable.

Like any champion, Andy pulled out the big guns and fired away from the get-go. Mahut crumbled under Andy’s pressure and Andy took an immediate lead, 3-0. Andy held his position, charged full steam ahead to the winner’s circle, only allowing Mahut to win two points off his serve the entire last set, and never looked back.

It was a great opening match for Andy in the US Open Series, and his roadtrip has just begun; next stop, Round 3 against the winner of the Robredo vs. Cilic/Dlouhy match. Stay tuned to AR.com for all Andy at the Rogers Cup in Canada this week. Go Andy!

Andy dug deep but eventually fell to Marin Cilic 4-6, 6-4, 4-6 at the Rogers Cup in Toronto Today.

Cilic, who defeated Robredo yesterday, proved a resilient opponent out of the starting gates. The Croat earned the only break in the opening set to take the lead 6-4. Andy struggled with his first serve in the opening set but fought back in the second, breaking Cilic to level the match at 4-6, 6-4. Both Andy and Cilic traded break point opportunities throughout the match.

In the third set, Andy found himself down a break at 2-4, and despite a tough battle was unable to recover. Since Andy and Mardy withdrew from the doubles competition, Andy will now start preparations for The Masters Series in Cincinnati.
